Dental Implant Torque Wrenches

Implant torque wrenches are the most important tools used in prosthetic placement. The right dental torque wrench will improve the chairside workflow by making placement stress-free and convenient. The best tools ensure safety by eliminating errors. Adjustable torque settings allow for the perfect fit with any system.

Dental Implant Technologies supplies the most reliable implant torque wrenches for dentists. Learn about the importance of high-quality dental torque wrenches and explore the options available today.

Choosing a Reliable Dental Torque Wrench for Implants

There are several elements to consider when selecting a reliable dental torque wrench for implants. Materials, design, and compatibility are all key.

  • The material of a dental torque wrench for implants will determine its durability and suitability for surgery. The best implant torque wrenches are made from surgical stainless steel, offering an excellent combination of strength and durability. Stainless steel can be sterilized with autoclave and hand-washed or machine washed using an ultrasonic bath.
  • Design is also key. A dental torque wrench for implants should be small and maneuverable to easily access the oral cavity. There are straight and contra angle options available to provide access in the anterior and posterior. Contra angle dental implant wrenches are ideal for molars.
  • Compatibility also plays a role. Dental implant prosthetic drivers use square and hex ratchet connections. Torque wrenches provide compatibility for both. An adaptor can be used to convert a hex dental torque wrench for implants to a square connection.

As a trusted supplier of reliable dental implant wrenches, Dental Implant Technologies has a complete range of styles to suit any clinician and procedure. All of our wrenches cover the three key elements of dental implant wrench design.

Why Use a Torque Wrench Over a Standard Ratcheted Wrench?

Torque wrenches allow greater control and accuracy when securing dental implant attachments. By setting a torque figure, there’s less risk of causing damage to the implant screw, abutment, implant post, and the bone surrounding the implant.

Standard wrenches can be used by experienced clinicians, and hand drivers are even used in some cases. If the clinician is unfamiliar with the implant system, a torque wrench should be selected. Even many experienced clinicians choose torque wrenches simply because they allow finer control and provide peace of mind, reducing stress during the procedure.

Handheld drivers and wrenches typically achieve values beyond 40 Ncm, which is unsuitable for some systems. Most implant systems require tightening between 20 and 30Ncm. The best torque wrenches allow settings between 10 and 40 Ncm.

Contra Angle vs. Straight Implant Torque Wrench Designs

For most positions, a straight implant torque wrench will allow access for securing the abutment screw. In cases where access is challenging, typically at the molar region, a contra angle implant torque wrench can be selected.

Clinicians that routinely perform implant placement, maintenance, and restorations should keep both types on hand.

Dental implant torque wrenches can be used for manual placement of dental implants after the osteotomy has been created. A minimum of 30 Ncm is typically necessary to achieve osseointegration. Clinicians should follow all manufacturer recommendations when using torque wrenches to place dental implants. Implant placement drivers (square and hex connection) can be used with our wrenches.

Preventing Movement of the Implant When Using a Dental Implant Wrench

For immediate implant placement, there’s a risk of rotating the dental implant when applying torque to the abutment screw. This is a risk even when setting a torque figure that corresponds to the manufacturer’s suggestion.

There is a simple technique available to avoid this problem when using a dental implant wrench.

Using a dental hemostat, the clinician can have a surgical assistant grip the abutment in place before applying torque to the screw. A curved hemostat like this Kelly Hemostat (SKU: NX-HMOKC) is typically the best option to provide easy access.

With the abutment gripped by the assistant, the screw can be secured, and torque from the dental implant wrench will only be applied to the screw rather than the implant post and the abutment. This technique is typically used for immediate placement when the implant post hasn’t osseointegrated.
