Straumann® Screw Removal with a Reliable Screw Remover Kit

Fractured screws and screws with damaged heads in implant channels must be removed quickly and efficiently. Incorrect and failed attempts could create the need to remove the entire implant, increasing the cost and complexity of the procedure, and seriously inconveniencing the patient.

While screw fractures are relatively rare, they do occur. Prosthodontists and experienced implant dentists rely on removal kits to safely remove fractured or stripped screws.

For Straumann® implants, clinicians can rely on Straumann® screw removal kits from Dental Implant Technologies. We supply the most reliable implant screw removal kits for clinicians in the United States.

Stripped or Fractured? A Straumann® Screw Removal Kit Can Do Both

Two issues contribute to the need for Straumann® screw removal. In some cases, the screw head could be stripped, making it impossible to engage the screw and remove it with standard tools. In rarer cases, the screw could be fractured, and using the wrong tool to remove it could result in further damage and the eventual need to remove the entire implant.

Clinicians want to avoid situations where the entire implant needs to be removed. Straumann® screw removal kits are designed to limit this risk. Whether fractured or stripped, Straumann® screw removal kits will allow for successful retrieval so that the patient can progress to the next stage of their treatment without further setbacks or complications.

Steps for Removing an Implant Screw with a Straumann® Screw Retrieval Kit

The steps for removing a threaded implant screw with a Straumann® screw retrieval kit are relatively straightforward but should be performed by an experienced implant dentist or specialist prosthodontist. Clinicians can consult with their prosthodontist for chairside assistance or training.

The correct prosthetic guide must be selected for successful retrieval. Straumann® screw retrieval kits include prosthetic guides for Straumann® (sometimes misspelled as Strauman) and other major implant systems, including Hi-Tec Implants.

To remove a threaded screw:

  1. With the correct guide selected from a Straumann® screw retrieval kit, attach the guide to the included guide handle and engage the connection with the implant. The handle should be gripped firmly throughout the procedure.
  2. A divot can now be created at the top of the failed or threaded screw using the included reverse drills. The divot should be no more than 1mm. The drill is set to 1,200 – 1,300 in the reverse setting to create the divot in the screw fragment.
  3. With the divot guide created, the guide holder and guide from the Straumann® screw retrieval kit can be disengaged and removed.
  4. With the drill set to 50 – 80 RPM in the reverse setting, the tap drill attachment can now be used to remove the damaged screw.

An experienced clinician can complete the removal process safely in just a few minutes. Dental Implant Technologies supplies reliable and accurate Straumann® screw tap kits to ensure success in the procedure.
